This question used to legitimately make squirm. For many years I carried such self doubt, and would sheepishly answer … ‘Er, No’. But now, I say "YES, I am" with absolute pride.
Here's why.
While I wholeheartedly acknowledge & respect the hours of study and blood, sweat and tears that goes into a university degree, there is no 'course' that covers:
~ What it actually FEELS to have lived with chronic anxiety since childhood.
~ What it feels like as a child, to MASK your internal turmoil in order to ‘fit in’ for a full day of school.
~ How SHAMEFUL it can feel to have a neurodiverse brain that learns differently to your peers.
~ How as a child, your INABILITY TO REGULATE emotions can wreck havoc on your self esteem.
~ What it feels like to have struggled with addiction later in life, because you were never taught HEALTHY ways to regulate… and then....what it feels like to have not just beaten, but SMASHED them after finally being taught HOW!!
~ A live-in experience of being a FULL TIME CARER for children who also share the same challenges and sensitivities as you (this is a doozy!). No, all of these things have to be LIVED to truly appreciate the visceral feeling of the experience.
Something we ALL have experienced though, is how amazing life can feel when we are seen, heard, understood and supported.
I’m not saying that our amazing, fully qualified health professionals don't know how to do that - no, not for a second! Throughout my life, the support of such individuals (for whom I have much respect) has been crucial to me and my families mental health and wellbeing.
What I am saying though, is that the resources I create here at Every Day I'm a Rainbow HQ, are thoughtfully penned from the perspective of one who has lived it, walked it, and intrinsically knows the language that hits right in the heartspace of neurodiverisity.
There is so much that each of us have in our hand to share with the world. Never let a lack of "text book training" stop you from shining your light brightly too, because there is SOMEONE out there that will benefit deeply from your journey of 'lived-in' wisdom too.
Much love,
Susanna x
